The blue dahlia flower is symbolic of fresh starts and new beginnings…
Two things that everyone deserves.
-The Blue Dahlia Project-
We are creating The Blue Dahlia Project in order to raise public awareness about the persistent stigma around mental health.
We want to be able to create a platform that allows for individual voices to be heard, to create a safe space for people to share their stories and to not be afraid to seek help in a time of need.
We believe that every human being has a right to access appropriate mental and behavioral healthcare. Our ultimate goal is to find a way to make that possible.
45% of Adults are living with an untreated mental illness.
Major depressive disorder is more likely to affect women than men.
20% of people who are struggling with substance abuse also suffer from some form of mood disorder.
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.
It is the 2nd leading cause of death in people age 10-34. 40% of those who complete suicide, have made more than one attempt.
(If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911 immediately.)
Two out of three people struggling with depression do not actively seek treatment.
The list of factors is extensive. Reasons like, insufficient finances, no access or transportation, they are unsure where to begin, afraid of others finding out, concerned about employment repercussions, only to name a few.
The majority of us have been touched by mental illness in one way or another. You are never alone.
This is our call to action.
